The assumptions behind this calculator
- Results are shown in today's dollars (adjusted for inflation, default 2.5%). We also show the pool in actual future dollars for context — the same amount, before adjusting for inflation.
- Employer contributions are set at the current Super Guarantee rate of 12% of your income, with 15% contributions tax applied.
- Default net returns after fees and tax: Conservative 4.5%, Balanced 6.0%, Growth 7.0% per year. You can override these under "Advanced assumptions".
- Your income is assumed to keep pace with inflation, and contributions continue until your chosen retirement age.
- Retirement income is estimated by drawing the pool down evenly (with a modest ongoing return) to your chosen age, and excludes the Age Pension.
- Any other assets you include are grown at the same return, but the estimate can't allow for capital gains tax (including the 2027 changes), selling costs or income tax on them.
- Default settings are based on ASIC's MoneySmart superannuation calculator assumptions and the ASFA Retirement Standard. Benchmarks such as the ASFA figures are updated periodically — check moneysmart.gov.au for current figures.
General Advice Warning: This calculator provides a general estimate only and is not a prediction or personal financial advice. It doesn't take into account your personal objectives, financial situation or needs. Actual returns vary year to year and could be negative. Superannuation rules and rates change over time. Consider seeking personal advice before making decisions, and see moneysmart.gov.au for the Government's independent calculators. If you include other assets such as property, shares or a business to be sold, the real outcome will also depend on capital gains tax (including the changes from 2027), selling costs and any effect on your Age Pension.
